The International Master’s Degree in Multimedia Creation for Live Shows is made up of 7 modules + the module for the development of the TFM Final Master’s Project. Throughout these modules, we will delve into multimedia creation in the field of performance and installations. You will receive training in the most important professional software: Madmapper for videomapping and videoscenes, Ableton software for sound editing and live composition, Touchdesigner language for interaction and lighting, among others.

These core modules will converge, in this edition, in the preparation and realisation of a live installation proposal, which embraces one or more elements such as light, technology, interaction, image and/or performance.

Cristina Casanova, director of the Master, Manuel Conde, assistant director of the Master, Pablo Álvarez, Siddharth Gautam, Luis Triviño, together with the rest of the guest lecturers, will accompany you throughout this creation.

In the first edition of the master’s degree, the annual project was the production of the play “AMOR”, co-directed by Pep Gatell and Cristina Casanova, which we premiered on 11 December 2022 at the Teatre EL TEM in Valencia, one of the most prestigious in the Valencian Community.

The master’s degree is aimed at:

Students/professionals interested in multimedia creation, video mapping, software, and technologies applied to the arts in their different aspects: installations, performing arts, and music.

It is required that participants have knowledge of the use of video, photography, and/or sound editing software.

STRUCTURE AND MODULES

PHASE 1.
Period:
October to March

Module: Context. Multimedia and performing arts

A special module in which the management and teaching staff of the master’s degree will share with the students the most experimental works and formats in which they have worked over time, both in their commercial and artistic projects, in order to learn about the possibilities offered by the combination of audiovisual and technological media in the scenic and installation spheres.

Module: Videoscene / Videomapping
Main software studied: Madmapper

In this module we will explore and work on videoscene and video mapping, the art of using video and lighting projections on any surface turning common objects into dynamic three-dimensional scenarios, and immersive effect on the audience. This study of the possibilities and conditioning factors of projection technology will be carried out in its two complementary aspects of video scene and video mapping. We will combine the study of the context, with reference cases of audiovisuals in the performing arts, with the practice of projection techniques.

Module: Sound and live composition. Ableton Live
Main software studied: Ableton Live

In this module, the students will learn to record, compose and mix tracks, and at the same time, they will approach sound design and music from the perspective of experimental sound art. Within the module, students will study Ableton Live, the most versatile program in the music software market. Its fast learning curve and intuitive interface have made it a powerful tool for creative composition. We will develop sessions designed for installations and events and how each tool within Ableton Live can help the student to develop a live performance.

Module: Light Art.
Main software: Madmapper, lighting controls

General introduction to lighting, reviewing the theoretical and technical concepts required to work on the creative lighting of a project. The student will be given tools to create and control lighting from a visual language, through experimentation with the luminaire and the use of Madmapper software. Students will review the references of scenic and interactive proposals in which lighting is one of the main elements and will experiment with non-conventional lighting: video projectors, lasers, LED addressable, special effects, as well as the properties of surfaces, with the aim of making lighting creation one of the protagonists of the scene.

Module: Interactivity. Interaction on stage, immersive experiences.

Main software: Touchdesigner and Processing languages, and Kalliope app.

Interactive installations, immersive experiences, and Touchdesigner language:

the symbiosis between performing arts and technology applied to interactivity is becoming more and more important. In this module, students will learn to design and create interactive elements merging design, art, technology, and craftsmanship. They will be introduced to the use of sensors for interactive installations, the world of “real-time”, and the programming languages  Processing and Touchdesigner, to produce and manipulate immersive experiences.

FINAL PROJECT

PHASE 2.
Period: April

A few weeks of inspiration in which the students focus on the conception of the pieces/installations that they will premiere/exhibit at the end of the master’s degree, depending on the requirements of the Call for Proposals that will be launched at the beginning of April, and which varies each year. In order to write their proposals, students will have personalised advice from the teaching staff. They will also receive some talks from important personalities from different fields of culture and art.

PHASE 3.
Period: April to June

In this third part of the master’s degree, students will work on the development of their project, the creative piece/s that they will present at the end of the master. The students will work under the guidance and support of the direction and the teaching staff, continuing with the previous modules, now in a tutoring format.

This phase will end with the exhibition of the project in June
