Interview with Álvaro de los Ángeles, professor at LABA Valencia

Meet Álvaro de los Ángeles, Faculty member:

“In a tutorial I received when I was a Master’s student in Norwich, UK, the external tutor to whom I exposed my artistic work analyzed what I was telling her and what she saw and concluded that perhaps my intentions would be better resolved in another way; through writing, for example. I thought she got it all wrong by then, the quick glance of an external person who did not understand what I wanted or intended to communicate. Shortly afterwards, when I started dedicating myself more to writing than to arts, I understood how this practice was inseparably linked to the theory, and I then remembered that very accurate encounter.”

“In the last twenty years I have written texts for artists, editorials on diverse perspectives on activism and culture (inseparable aspects for me), essays, I have practiced cultural management and taught at the UPV and private schools and universities. I have also curated exhibitions and edited fanzines and books for thirty years. Since 2018 I have been doing that for La documental edicions, an editorial project that presents artistic proposals in a tangential and independent way. Narratives of any kind, but especially those that link images and text, those that teach to see and read the visual in the textual and vice versa, will be the main motivations for the subjects that I will teach at #labavalencia, as well as specific writing workshops where the students face the transcendental fact of knowing how to explain what they want to achieve.”
