Iñaki Arteta

22 Years of Documentary Cinema

Iñaki Arteta has dedicated his life to documentary filmmaking. His filmography, which has courageously documented the victims of terrorism in Spain, has received numerous prestigious awards worldwide. Some of his works include: “Sin Libertad” (2001), “Voces sin libertad” (2004), “Trece entre mil” (2005), “El infierno vasco” (2008), “Testigo involuntario. Nicolás Redondo” (2012), “1980” (2014), “Contra la impunidad” (2016), “Agustín Ibarrola. Artista indomable” (2018). His latest film, “Bajo el silencio” (2020), was selected for 7 nominations at the 2021 Goya Awards, in the Tiempo de Historia section of SEMINCI Valladolid 2020, and nominated for the Spanish Film Critics’ Circle Award for Best Documentary of 2020, among others.

Blablanights Iñaki Arteta

Academician of the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences of Spain. He is part of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for Freedom. He was a member of the selection committee of the Bilbao International Short Film Festival (ZINEBI) from 2000 to 2014. He has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Constitutional Merit, the Gold Medal from the Barakaldo City Hall, the Covite Award in 2006 (Collective of Victims of Terrorism in the Basque Country), and the Annual Award from the Association for Tolerance in 2021.

Best Editing at the Alcalá de Henares Film Festival. Best Documentary at the San Roque Short Film Festival. Best Director at the International Film Showcase of Palencia. Special Mention at the Rochester International Film Festival. Special Mention at the World Media Festival in Hamburg.

“Voces sin libertad” (50’ – 2004). Best Director of Documentary at the Platinum Award (WorldFest 2005, Houston, USA). Finalist at the International Documentary Awards (Los Angeles). Prix Europa 2004.

“Trece entre mil” (90’ – 2005). Finalist for the Goya Awards 2006 for Best Documentary (Spain). Second Prize at the Tiempo de Historia section of the SEMINCI in Valladolid (2005). Selected by the Rome Film Festival as one of the best European documentaries of 2005. Included in the “Twenty Best Documentaries in the World” collection, published by El PAÍS newspaper in 2010.

“El infierno vasco” (105’ – 2008). Best Documentary Film of 2008 at the Circle of Spanish Film Writers and Critics. Selected at the Spanish Cinema Week in Nantes. Selected at the Spanish Cinema and Culture Week in Regensburg. Selected at the Cinespaña Festival in Toulouse.

“Testigo involuntario. Nicolás Redondo” (88’ – 2012). Selected in the Tiempo de Historia section of the SEMINCI in Valladolid (2012). Nominated for Best Documentary Film of 2012 by the Spanish Film Writers and Critics Circle.

“1980” (100’ – 2014). Selected in the Tiempo de Historia section of the SEMINCI in Valladolid (2014). Part of the “The Act of Killing. Cinema and Global Violence” cycle at the San Sebastián Film Festival (2016).

“Contra la impunidad” (108’ – 2016). Selected in the Tiempo de Historia section of the SEMINCI in Valladolid (2016). Official section at the following festivals: Amsterdam International Filmmaker Festival, Mexico City International Film Festival, TMC London Film Festival, Madrid Human Rights Film Festival, and Roma Cinema Doc.

“Agustín Ibarrola. Artista indomable” (80’ – 2018). For “Imprescindibles” (TVE), featuring contemporary Spanish artists and creators. Awarded at the Canada International Film Festival (2019) and Vegas Movie Awards (2020).

“Bittor Arginzoniz. Vivir en el silencio” (84’ – 2019). Selected for the Culinary Zinema section at the San Sebastián Film Festival (2019). Selected at FIPADOC 2020 (Biarritz) and The 53rd Annual WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival. Participated in the Málaga Film Festival (2020), Edinburgh Spanish Film Festival, and Devour! The Food Film Festival (2020).

“Bajo el silencio” (153’ – 2020). 7 Nominations at the Goya Awards 2021. Selected in the Tiempo de Historia section of the SEMINCI in Valladolid (2020). Nominated for Best Documentary Film of 2020 by the Spanish Film Writers and Critics Circle.
