"Déficits", Final Degree Project by Joana Soler, graduate in Graphic Design and Digital Media at LABA Valencia
Joana Soler’s Final Degree Project is the first in a carefully planned series of four editorial volumes, inspired by The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, the seminal work by neurologist and writer Oliver Sacks. Through this series, Joana Soler seeks to explore, reinterpret, and translate the neuropsychological cases described by Sacks into a fully visual, material, and sensory experience. Rather than merely illustrating these cases, she uses the tools of editorial and graphic design as a language in their own right, one capable of evoking perceptual shifts and cognitive distortions in those who experience the work.
“This project has been a process of constant learning. I have learned to let myself be guided by my professors, to question my initial intuitions, and to listen both to my inner voice and to the external voices that have accompanied me along this journey, especially during the most critical moments. I have been able to observe and study how design can function as a space for thought, translation, and care. On a personal level, I am interested in continuing to explore sensory editorial design as a tool for communication and empathy. I aspire to create books that are not only read, but also felt, and to have the opportunity to share my passion for them with readers. And, of course, to continue researching the relationship between design and mental health, not from an aesthetic standpoint, but through transformative experience.”
