"The sons of Etna" by Marina Mustica

This photobook is the final project of Marina Mustica, who graduated from the BAH en Fotografía y vídeo at LABA Valencia in July 2024.

It tells the story of Sicilian identity through a personal journey to Catania, the city where the author’s father was born.

She mixes photos, handwritten recipes and poetic texts to talk about memory, landscapes, family and roots.

The special thing about the project is the way she carefully puts everything together: the images, the words and even the recipes (which come as postcards) create a story that transforms the simple into something poetic. The recipes also add an emotional touch, connecting the reader to Sicilian tradition and food.

“A documentary and narrative photobook that recounts the journey to Catania, my father’s homeland, and explores the Sicilian cultural heritage through the relationship between family, memory and volcano.
Through photographs, recipes and poetic prose, the book shares memories, experiences and reflections on identity, roots and Sicily. The photobook includes handwritten family recipes, which are accompanied by replicas in the form of small postcards: they are like little ‘souvenirs’ of the journey.”

This work is the result of a mature and thoughtful work, made by someone who, after having lived and created a lot, returns to his origins to see them with new eyes.
